Tea Party vs. Beer Party: in Texas, this Election Day is about Rare Saint Arnold Beer

High turnout expected for Election Day launch of Saint Arnold Divine Reserve No. 10

HOUSTON, November 1, 2010 – The pundits can agree on one thing: on this Election Day, craft beer enthusiasts are expected to cast their ballots for Saint Arnold Divine Reserve No. 10. Tomorrow, Saint Arnold Brewing Company (www.saintarnold.com), the oldest craft brewery in Texas, will ship a limited supply of Saint Arnold Divine Reserve No.10 to stores, restaurants and bars in Austin, Dallas/Fort Worth, Houston and San Antonio.

Saint Arnold brewed approximately 160 barrels of Divine Reserve No. 10, which produced a total of 1,872 cases and 36 kegs. Saint Arnold’s distributors allocate Divine Reserve to stores, restaurants and bars on the basis of how much Saint Arnold beer they have sold over the previous six months. Anticipating high demand and potential shortages, the brewery has asked retailers to limit sales to two six packs per customer and is asking customers to limit their purchase to a six pack or two.

The Saint Arnold Divine Reserve series is known for its small batches of high-quality, full-flavored beer. Each new batch features a unique recipe and is distinguished from its predecessors by the batch number on the neck label. Saint Arnold Divine Reserve No. 10 is an English Barleywine inspired by Houston homebrewer Chris Landis’ winning recipe from this year’s Big Batch Brew Bash.

“Divine Reserve No. 10 is going to age really well. I recommend trying some now and putting the rest away in a cool place for a few years and it will develop into a very interesting beer,” said Brock Wagner, Founder/Brewer of Saint Arnold Brewing, noting that the winning entry in the Big Batch Brew Bash had aged for nearly two years before the judges tasted it. In recent weeks, Wagner has been leading beer tastings of earlier editions of Divine Reserve, some of which have aged five years.

“All beer changes in character with aging, but the vast majority of beer should be enjoyed as fresh as possible,” said Wagner. “Big beers like Divine Reserve can benefit from aging, which can soften the alcohol flavors and bring out the sweet malt notes. The aging should be done with the beer stored cold.”

Rich and complex with a balance toward sweetness and a caramel-like aroma, it is full-bodied and delivers a chewy mouthfeel. According to the style guidelines from the Beer Judge Certification Program, the English Barleywine typically features English hops and rich specialty malt flavors.
Saint Arnold Divine Reserve No. 10 is priced at approximately $16 per six pack. More information on the Divine Reserve series is available at http://saintarnold.com/beers/divine.html.
