HOUSTON, June 1, 2011 – Ed Schipul, CEO and president of Schipul - The Web Marketing Company (www.schipul.com), a Web marketing, Social Media consulting and Web design company, will present “Social Media Philanthropy,” at the Executive Service Corps of Houston’s Leading Edge Luncheon. The event is scheduled tomorrow, June 2, 2011 at the Junior League of Houston.

The rise of so-called “social philanthropy” has been a hot topic as nonprofit organizations struggle to integrate the use of tools such as Facebook, Twitter and YouTube into their operations. Schipul believes social philanthropy is less about technology and more about gaining insight into people’s motivations to encourage engagement or behavior change.

“Whether a nonprofit organization is involved in cancer prevention, protecting the environment or advancing our knowledge about space, an important step is to identify what will motivate people to pay attention and get involved,” said Schipul. “Online tools can provide insight into motivations and can accelerate an organization’s success as a change agent, but they need to be part of an overall strategy.”

Recent data suggests nonprofit organizations still have a lot to learn about using social media. Fewer than three percent of respondents to the Nonprofit Social Network Benchmark survey raised more than $10,000 on Facebook in 2010. Meanwhile, the survey found that few nonprofits are investing in social media -- 75 percent allocate one quarter of a single staffer’s time or less to managing their organization’s social media activities.

Ed Schipul’s presentation is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. on Thursday, June 2, 2011.
