Saint Arnold Brewing Co. Releases Icon Green

Amarillo Hefe offers surprising citrus flavor without the slice of fruit

HOUSTON, May 1, 2013 – Saint Arnold Brewing Co. (www.saintarnold.com), the oldest craft brewery in Texas, today announced the upcoming release of Saint Arnold Icon Green, the latest in the brewery’s line of rotating beers that complement the brewery’s year-round and seasonal offerings. Saint Arnold Icon Green is an Amarillo hefeweizen inspired by a recipe developed three years ago by Saint Arnold Brewer Sam Wright as a wedding gift for his sister and brother-in-law.

“My sister asked for a special beer so I worked on bringing together the esters and phenolics of the hefeweizen yeast with the unique piney and citrus notes of the Amarillo hops,” said Wright.
In addition to Amarillo hops, Icon Green is made with two-row barley as well as wheat, Vienna and Cara-Munich malts.

“This is a refreshing summer beer for Texas and Louisiana that has the base of a hefeweizen with the surprise of the Amarillo hops,” said Saint Arnold Founder/Brewer Brock Wagner. “The spice of the yeast combines with the orange and spruce flavors of the hops to create a beer that you would swear actually had spice and fruit added to it, but it is just an artful combination of malt, hops, yeast and water.”

A new Saint Arnold Icon beer is released every three months or so, depending on how quickly supplies are exhausted. Saint Arnold Icon Green was pushed up on the calendar due to strong demand for Saint Arnold Icon Blue, a Cascadian Dark Ale. As the brewery continues to experiment, some Icon styles are expected to be replaced from one year to the next while other styles may return.

The beer is referred to as Icon Green because of its striking metallic green and black label. It will be available in 4-packs of 12 ounce bottles and on tap in bars and restaurants throughout Texas and Louisiana beginning later this week.

Upcoming beers in the Saint Arnold Icon line include a Bohemian Pils, scheduled for release around September, and Saint Arnold Icon Red, a beer being described as a bière de saison, which will replace 2012’s Belgian-Style Pale Ale.
