pretzel-day.jpgHOUSTON, April 26, 2011 – Saint Arnold Brewing Company (www.saintarnold.com), the oldest craft brewery in Texas, never wants to waste an opportunity to enjoy the finer things in life. Thus, when the Saint Arnold brew crew discovered that April 26th was National Pretzel Day, they did what any self-respecting brewer would do: schedule a party. After all, few things go together better than pretzels and beer.
To celebrate the 1,400 year old snack, Saint Arnold will open its downtown Houston brewery to those celebrating National Pretzel Day at 5:30 p.m.
Focusing on the craft of pretzel making, Saint Arnold will welcome Slow Dough Bread Co. to bake pretzels onsite. Slow Dough’s pretzels are made with high-gluten flour and yeast, water, sea salt, butter and oil — seared in food-grade lye and sprinkled with “pretzel salt.” Houston’s Burger Guyz will contribute their special mustard made with Saint Arnold Fancy Lawnmower Beer.
“To this day in Bavaria, every beer hall serves a basket of big, soft, bready pretzels on every table,” said Saint Arnold Founder/Brewer Brock Wagner. “Well made pretzels are hard to find in this country, but Slow Dough’s pretzels are authentic. Fifth generation baker Heath Wendell went to Germany to research the perfect pretzel. The proof is in the pretzel.”
Researchers believe that pretzels were invented by monks in Southern France or Northern Italy at about the same time that Saint Arnold’s namesake, Saint Arnold, was enthroned as the Bishop of Metz in the year 612. Pretzel makers are said to have used the inter-connected sections of pretzels to help children understand the Christian Trinity of “Father, Son, and Holy Ghost.”
Admission to Saint Arnold’s National Pretzel Day celebration costs $10, which includes a fresh pretzel and a souvenir tour glass.
